UK Commission suggests a moral code for Artificial Intelligence developers
Traditionally AI has been most feared in combination with nuclear missiles. This should always remain a major concern, however in terms of AI we are probably more directly affected when our AI device forgets to set our morning alarm. The intelligent fridge may forget its best-before routine and leave you with bad produce. Or your new webdesign app that creates entire pages from scratch causes massive unemployment in low-cost production environments in India, Bangladesh and other emerging economies.
The House of Lords on AI
The AI Commission of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom has done extensive research on opportunities and threats of AI. While chatbots and voice bots have slowly but surely entered our lives the question of responsibility and morality becomes increasingly relevant. It certainly doesn’t hurt to stay aware of both sides of the medal: AI has huge opportunities but we will have to continually stay aware of our moral responsibilities as developers to keep it that way.
The Moral Code for Artificial Intelligence
Here’s what the AI Committee thinks the AI moral code should look like. It holds 5 key principles that should be accepted sector-wide, nationally and internationally, the commission says:
- Artificial intelligence should be developed for the common good and benefit of humanity.
- Artificial intelligence should operate on principles of intelligibility and fairness.
- Artificial intelligence should not be used to diminish the data rights or privacy of individuals, families or communities.
- All citizens should have the right to be educated to enable them to flourish mentally, emotionally and economically alongside artificial intelligence.
- The autonomous power to hurt, destroy or deceive human beings should never be vested in artificial intelligence.
